Scintigraphy

The clinic has a bone scan imaging system specially developed for horses by the company MIE. This technique is particularly sensitive to detect bone inflammation in particular to highlight the lesions not visible in radiography or to judge the significance of radiographic lesions. Follow-up examinations are particularly useful to see if bone inflammation has disappeared before the horse back to work.

The principle of imaging is to inject a radioactive substance to bone affinity (99m Tc diphosphonate) two to three hours before the examination. The gamma camera detects the rays emitted the areas of bone inflammation.

Because of radioactivity, the horses remain at the clinic for 60 hours in special stalls so that the radioactive substance loses its activity. This product is safe for the horse. Scintigraphy is regulated and facilities of the clinic are in agreement with this regulation.
